AI-generated content may be incorrect.Zimbabwean-born artist Anna Mudeka brings a truly inspiring journey of music, resilience and activism to Waterside with her acclaimed solo show Mama Afrika: Celebrating the Life of Miriam Makeba.

This unforgettable 120-minute performance celebrates the extraordinary life of Miriam Makeba — the South African singer, songwriter and fearless anti-apartheid activist whose voice echoed around the world. From the vibrant townships of South Africa to global stages, exile, political activism and finally her triumphant return home, Anna’s storytelling brings Makeba’s legacy vividly to life.

Audiences will be captivated by iconic songs like Mbube, Pata Pata, and Soweto Blues, alongside powerful reflections on events like the Sharpeville massacre, Makeba’s exile in the US, her passionate testimony to the United Nations, and her bold marriage to Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael.

Anna Mudeka’s rich multilingual vocals and deeply personal storytelling fuse with ancestral musical traditions, creating a show that is as much a tribute as it is a call to hope and courage — perfect for audiences aged 12 and up.

Anna says: "This show started as a dream 15 years ago, and now it’s thrilling to bring Miriam Makeba’s inspiring story to new cities and bigger stages. Manchester has a rich history of activism and culture — I can’t wait to connect with audiences here and celebrate a legend who stood for justice and humanity."

Mama Afrika is written by Tomas Lutuli Brickhill, directed by Tonia Daley Campbell, and developed with support from Arts Council England and The Miriam Makeba Foundation.

Mama Afrika comes to Waterside in Sale, Trafford on Fri 24 Oct | 19:30
