EDITOR’S NOTE
About the Epstein Theatre
The Grade II listed theatre opened in November 1915 as the Crane Concert Hall, situated above the Crane Brothers’ music shop in Hanover Street. It was originally intended as a space for instrumental recitals which were given from a small platform to the rear of the current auditorium.
The acquisition of a neighbouring building allowed the Crane Brothers to expand the venue, creating a proper stage, and in 1938 it was renamed the Crane Theatre.
Popular with both amateur dramatic organisations and visiting companies and performers, when the theatre was at risk of closure in 1967 the lease was taken over by the Liverpool Corporation which invested £7,000 in refurbishments. The theatre reopened in 1968 as the Neptune, the new name celebrating the city’s maritime history.
The five-storey building was given Grade II listed status in 1975. The theatre’s auditorium has mahogany panelling and is decorated with Grecian friezes, urns and wreathed busts of composers.
Despite its popularity, health and safety concerns led to the venue being closed again in 2005. When it finally reopened its doors in 2011, following a further £1.2 million upgrade, it was renamed in honour of the late Brian Epstein.
The 388-seat theatre was managed between 2021 and 2023 by Epstein Entertainments Ltd.
Liverpool City Council, which retains the freehold of Hanover House, has now leased the building to JSM Company Group Ltd. In turn, JSM has leased
