Murder On The Orient Express - Review by Natalie Anglesey at The Lowry

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS
AT THE LOWRY UNTIL SATURDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 2024

Hands up if, like me, you are an Agatha Christie fan. Thought so!  The excellent Fiery Angel production company with director Lucy Bailey, knew they were onto a sure - fire winner with this touring production of one of Christie’s most popular novels.

This is where I have to confess that in my past I have been a guest on the real Orient Express replicating that same journey. In a strange way that experience has made me more critical of staged productions although I always intend to keep an open mind.

Launching this national tour at The Lowry ensured a packed auditorium. However, it’s crucial that the initial opening scene sets the right atmosphere of winter in 1934 when an avalanche stops the Orient Express dead in its tracks. Much of the success of the opening scenes is due to an imaginative train set designed by Mike Britton which hopefully, as the tour progresses, will see the set changes speeded up.

A murder on a train full of suspects seems an impossible case to solve until you are aware that the world’s most famous detective, Hercule Poirot, is on the case before the train reaches its final destination.

Starring Michael Maloney (Belfast, Young Victoria, The Crown), as the celebrated Belgian sleuth. It's a brave attempt - although his accent wavered occasionally. The rest of the hard working cast includes Bob BarrettMila CarterRebecca CharlesDebbie ChazenSimon CottonJean-Baptiste FillonChristine KavanaghPaul KeatingIniki MarianoRishi Rian and Alex Stedman. Congratulations to them for making the most of their dramatic stories.

Murder on the Orient Express still remains one of  Christie’s greatest literary achievements. This  brand-new production is a thrilling ride and an ingenious murder mystery, guaranteed to keep you guessing until the end of the line. The audience loved every minute. You can see it at The Lowry until the end of this week before it goes on a national tour.
