New High Sheriff of Greater Manchester
High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Installation Ceremony at Lowry Theatre
Over 100 guests, from all sectors of the community, were
present at an impressive Installation Ceremony at The Lowry, in Salford,
last week as Lorraine Worsley-Carter MBE
DL became High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. Presented with the Sheriff’s
Patent by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, the proceedings were led
by the Under Sheriff of the County Palatine, David Cam, and witnessed by His
Honour Judge John Potter.
The Office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular title in
British history, and little has changed in the precise order the
proceedings take each year. The proceedings required a Magistrate, Michael
Rollinson, as well as Duchy of Lancaster Representative Debbie Garrity and two
Queen’s Commissioners, Mrs Hayley Smith and Miss Lynne Kelly.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the High Sheriff is
theoretically the sovereign’s judicial representative in the county. Lorraine’s
declaration as ‘Keeper of the Peace’ was made in the presence of the Chief
Constable of Greater Manchester, Stephen Watson, as well representatives from
the Greater Manchester and Transport Police.
Lorraine, who succeeds the immediate past High
Sheriff, Diane Hawkins, said, “I am truly honoured and humbled to be
appointed to the role of High Sheriff of Greater Manchester 2022-2023,
especially during Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee Year. It is a huge privilege
to be the custodian of this ceremonial role during such an historic year. Like
all the High Sheriffs of Greater Manchester before me, I will support the Royal
family, the judiciary, the police and law enforcement, the emergency services,
prison and probation services, local authorities, charities and volunteers from
all sectors of our community. My role means I am well placed to bring together
a wide range of people within the County that I serve.”
I've known Lorraine for many years and was honoured to be among her guests at this important event which is so well deserved. We first met when I was a presenter on BBC Radio Manchester and Lorraine was presenting a great community service programme while working as Chair of the Prince's Trust for Greater Manchester. Lorraine has also worked as CSV's Regional Manager across ten northern local radio stations whilst also becoming a Magistrate.
Awarded her MBE in 1998 for outstanding service to broadcasting and the community, Lorraine became Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester in 2008. In 2020 she became one of the top 100 female entrepreneurs. She is currently Trustee of FAB, the Family and Babies Charity, as well as an Ambassador for Loud and Proud and The Pankhurts Trust. Lorraine is also a member of DANCE MANC, the Disabled Artists Networking Community. Her supportive family, led by stalwart husband Bob, with her daughter Hayley and her husband Melo were justifiably proud. Congratulations my dear!
