Natalie Anglesey 5 star review of The Band at The Lowry until Jan 26

THE BAND AT THE LOWRY!     5 star  Review by Natalie Anglesey

Do you remember the first time we saw The Band in Manchester? What a great show with a superb cast enjoying nightly standing ovations! There was a surprise appearance by Take That members at the finale that set the audience cheering!

Written by Tim Firth, who wrote Calendar Girls, and collaborated with Gary Barlow on the musical version of The Girls, The Band is still a great show. If anything the pace is tighter after touring the country and an exciting stay in London.

The members of The Band are  5 to 5, the winning band from BBC 1's Let It Shine - with AJ Bentley, Nick Carsberg, Curtis T Johns, Yazdan Qafouri and Harry Fabulous Brown.

If you haven't seen it yet let me explain that although it uses the music of Take That ,it's  not the story of their

early years. But we Take That fans are a loyal bunch-  although if it was rubbish I'd like to think I'd say so.

THE BAND is a musical about some of the fans and what it’s like to grow up with a boyband. The women who play them as teenagers and as adults are all excellent.

For five 16 year-old friends in 1992, ‘the band’ is everything.  25 years on, we are reunited with the group of friends, now 40-something women, as they try once more to fulfil their dream of meeting their heroes.

The excellent production is interspersed with the music of Take That superbly performed.

Director, Jack Ryder,  is best known for playing Jamie Mitchell in BBC 1's EastEnders from 1998 to 2002. His directing credits include the UK tours of Calendar Girls and The Full Monty, as well as assisting Tim Firth on his musical The Girls, which recently closed at London's Phoenix Theatre.

THE BAND is produced by David Pugh & Dafydd Rogers,  Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Mark Owen, and Robbie Williams.

This is a 5 star production beautifully designed by Jon Bausor and with excellent choreography by Kim Gavin. The lighting design is by Patrick Woodroffe, with video design by Luke Halls and sound design by Terry Jardine and Nick Lidster.

Give yourself a treat! The Band is at The Lowry until 26th January. Book at thelowry.com
